Chapter 69 : The Never-ending Adventure
Chapter 69 : The Never-ending Adventure
The Never-ending Adventure====================================
"Hmm~ This thing looks pretty nice. I'll buy it,"
Jiang Cheng said with a beaming smile as she tossed out a few gold coins and purchased an exquisite vase.
"Uh, Jiang Cheng, I don't have any more space to carry things,"
Lyle said awkwardly, glancing at Jiang Cheng. At this moment, he was loaded down with so many packages stacked higher than most people.
"Eh, really?"
Jiang Cheng turned her head to Lyle in surprise.
Looking at the two one-meter-high bags on Lyle's back, Jiang Cheng feigned astonishment and said, "Wow, I didn't realize I'd already bought so much. I thought it wasn't a lot."
"Uh,"
Lyle sweatdropped, "Mostly, you just bought a bunch of random stuff that's not really useful."
"Like bedding, and this smart refrigerator. Of course, carrying them around takes up space after you buy them."
"You've got a point,"
Jiang Cheng shrugged. "Well, since we're heading to another city, of course I need to prepare for arranging my new home."
"So that's the reason,"
Lyle said. "That does make sense. Once we get to the Flower Capital, there won't be such convenient high-tech stuff."
"Nothing to be done about it,"
Jiang Cheng shrugged. "Their technology there is still shackled by the god's rootless source. Once you leave your own city, you can't produce things anymore."
"No matter how much a single city increases its output, it can't supply every city."
"That's true,"
Lyle nodded. "So what are you going to do with your house here? Sell it?"
"Hah? No way,"
Jiang Cheng shrugged. "I put so much effort into decorating that beautiful little villa. How could I bear to sell it? I'll just leave it there."
"After all, with magic arrays set up inside, it won't even collect dust."
Lyle nodded, then asked, "So why are you buying all these other things?"
As he spoke, Lyle looked at the ornate vase in Jiang Cheng's hand.
To call it a vase was selling it short—actually, it was a set of vases and flower pots in various heights arranged on a large stand, the stand even taller than Jiang Cheng herself, and there were more than ten vases on it.
"This kind of thing is clearly unnecessary,"
Lyle said with a dark look.
"You won't find such beautifully-made vases from a complete assembly line outside of Adventurer City. And it's a whole set,"
Jiang Cheng said seriously.
"So what's that got to do with you taking along these useless vases?"
Lyle blurted out, confused.
"Oh, nothing really,"
Jiang Cheng shrugged. "But the next city is the Flower Capital—you don't want to display a few nice flowers?"
"Uh, well..."
Lyle felt a bit awkward. "I suppose that makes sense."
Though he and Teacher originally lived near the Flower Capital, as someone who rarely left home, he still felt both curious and a bit estranged from the famous flower rains of that city.
"So just hold onto them,"
Jiang Cheng said with a cheeky smile. "Vases can be useful."
"But as you can see, I can't carry any more,"
Lyle said, hoisting the two nearly man-sized bags.
"Oh, that's right,"
Jiang Cheng responded as if she'd only just realized, leaving Lyle speechless.
What was the point of this whole conversation, anyway?
Looking at his forgetful junior sister, Lyle thought that maybe now he understood why Teacher hadn't bothered to teach her properly—though he'd never dare say that aloud.
"In that case, I'll just use this mage's carry-on space."
However, Jiang Cheng's next words immediately floored Lyle.
"If you had that kind of magic, why didn't you say so earlier?"
Lyle asked, setting his burdens down with exasperation.
"Oh~"
Jiang Cheng's lips curled mischievously as she grinned. "I thought you knew."
"How would I know what kinds of magic you know? Isn't that a secret for spellcasters?"
Lyle retorted. "Even if you're my junior sister, you can't go asking about such private things."
"What secret?"
Jiang Cheng couldn't be bothered to haggle over that title she'd rebutted countless times. She rolled her eyes slightly. "Secret, my foot. Anyone hearing you would think you're asking for something more serious."
She gave him a sidelong glance. "As a Saintess, of course I should share everything with our great hero~"
"A personal space is standard for any magic user, like fireball. Of course I have one."
"As for what I know..."
Jiang Cheng said with a grin, "I know every divine art, even demigod-level divine arts, though if I used those I'd die."
"Mm,"
Lyle nodded solemnly. "Then don't use them."
"..."
Jiang Cheng didn't even want to respond. This blockhead's words were just... exasperating.
"So why didn't you use your carry-on space earlier?"
Lyle suddenly asked.
"Well..."
Jiang Cheng shrugged, her golden eyes lowered. "Divine arts are such a hassle to use, and they're pretty ugly too. I just didn't want to."
As she spoke, she raised her hand. The flesh and blood in her palm writhed, splitting open into a gaping hole—unnaturally deep, with no end in sight.
A mysterious suction force pulled the fridge, vase, and other items into the opening.
"All right, let's keep moving,"
Jiang Cheng said with a happy smile, striding forward.
Lyle fell silent for a while, only to recall Jiang Cheng's comment about the look and trouble of using divine arts.
In the end, Jiang Cheng before him was just a girl not even twenty, yet she'd walked the path of the Saintess and endured the pain of divine arts, using these unnatural powers every day.
After a long silence, Lyle cursed under his breath, "Damn this world."
Then he hurried to catch up.
............
"Main host," in the Divine Realm, Renata knelt respectfully before that hulking, rotting black corpse.
"Just call me by my name," came Ferran's disgusting voice.
"All right,"
Renata nodded and didn't insist otherwise.
She'd rather call this "younger brother" by name anyway. Now that her whole clan was dead, she no longer had any attachments and could finally do as she liked.
"Ferran..."
Thinking this, she moved closer, showing no aversion to the rotting black mire, and gingerly touched what Ferran's body had become.
Ferran shuddered, and the huge pile of black mire trembled along with him. He spoke. "What are you doing?"
"Nothing,"
Renata smiled with eyes glistening with faint tears, hugging Ferran's massive form.
"You've been through so much—being this way must be awful. But... as long as you're still alive, as long as you're alive, it's enough..."
Ferran was silent for a long time before suddenly laughing. From the sludge emerged a mimicry of an arm that hesitantly looked as if to pat her, but then withdrew.
"I'm fine. No need to worry, and no need to cry,"
Ferran said.
Seeing Ferran's movement, Renata grabbed the mimicked arm and pulled it to her shoulder.
"No, I'm not crying out of sadness, Ferran."
"Then... why?"
Ferran murmured in confusion. "My human emotions have dulled a bit."
"Because of love, Ferran,"
Renata smiled warmly. "Because I realized I still have family alive in this world."
"That's wonderful."
Renata pressed against Ferran's enormous body.
"Yeah, it really is wonderful..."
Ferran raised the upper portion of his immense form, as if lifting his head to look at the sky.
"All right," lowering his head, Ferran said, "Return to reality now. I need to deal with the remnant will of that false god."
"You have to go again..."
Renata said worriedly. "That being is so strong—won't it take centuries for it to disappear?"
"Of course,"
Ferran nodded, "But I won't lose."
"I still have our former main host, the help of all the seniors and teacher. Even a hundred or a thousand years, I'll wipe out this false god who killed so many."
"That is me—a never-ending adventure." (End of this volume)
