Chapter 38: Why Do You Smell So Nice?==============================
Jiang Cheng followed Lyle into her own courtyard, her face twisted into a bitter expression.
Thanks to Jiang Cheng's careful care, the courtyard was in full bloom, flowers everywhere, with the sound of a bubbling fountain, all creating a beautiful scene.
Unfortunately, today, the visitor was an unsentimental blockhead.
Lyle looked the courtyard up and down and nodded, then said to Jiang Cheng,
"This place is quite spacious. It should be big enough for our training—most martial techniques should be able to be performed here."
Jiang Cheng remained silent. She had spent so much time painstakingly designing and arranging this beautiful courtyard, and this was all Lyle had to say about it?
Forget it. Jiang Cheng shrugged—she had realized during her previous alter egos that this fool understood nothing about romance.
Once, in order to increase her importance in Lyle's eyes, she had gathered all the power and technology of the entire Mage Tower to make him a stunning semi-divine magical bracelet, which she gave him on his birthday.
The bracelet incorporated nearly all the most beautiful magical materials on the continent.
Each bead on the bracelet used special memory magic to seal inside powerful spells and the beautiful scenes she had witnessed.
Some beads displayed magnificent galaxies; some held seas of blooming flowers, and so on.
Whenever one sensed the dazzling light, the bracelet would refract a myriad of splendid colors.
However, Lyle, after holding it and glancing at it twice, had simply begun to study the magic inside, angering Jiang Cheng to the point where she ignored him for a full half hour.
But, given the situation before her, Jiang Cheng could not afford to be angry. What was more important now was to find a way to muddle through this damned physical training.
"Jiang Cheng,"
Lyle looked at her and spoke, "The purpose of our physical training is to give you the ability to protect yourself and evade attacks on your own."
"So, start running. Let me see your speed and stamina."
Ah... Jiang Cheng really wanted to refuse, but seeing the earnest sincerity in Lyle's eyes, she couldn't bring herself to say no.
"Haaa,"
Jiang Cheng let out a long sigh—another persona dead in his heart. Since he'd been in a bad mood lately anyway, she'd just go along with him.
Well, let's just say it was to increase the favorability of this identity. After all, she wasn't helping unconditionally, so it wasn't a loss.
Under Lyle's earnest gaze, Jiang Cheng began to sprint laps around the courtyard's central fountain.
However, while she kept thinking she'd just agree to Lyle, Jiang Cheng had forgotten how weak and unsuited for exercise her body was under her own deliberate control.
So...
"Bang!"
Under Lyle's watching eyes, Jiang Cheng had barely run less than fifty meters before she was panting heavily. Then her feet tangled, and she toppled over sideways.
??? I knew you were weak, but how could you be this ridiculously frail?!
With a flash, Lyle dashed toward Jiang Cheng's direction.
With such a feeble body, he really feared she'd break herself with even a minor fall.
Jiang Cheng, on her end, found herself out of breath after just a few steps.
She was a bit surprised, too—though she had controlled it deliberately, she had not expected her body to be this weak; this was a first for her.
A trace of metallic blood scent rose in her lungs, and right after, her feet tangled beneath her.
The next second, as the world spun around her, the pain she was anticipating did not come. Instead... it felt a little warm?
Opening her eyes, she found herself staring up at a night sky dotted with stars.
She frowned, instinctively raising her slender arm to push up from beneath herself.
Wait, why was the ground warm? She remembered not having floor heating installed in the courtyard.
Hold on, not only was the "ground" warm, but the texture underneath her after she fell felt off as well.
Jiang Cheng's body stiffened. She turned to look beneath herself.
Under her, Lyle was lying on his back, looking at her actions with a resigned expression.
"Ahem, well..."
Jiang Cheng was a bit embarrassed.
Even though she'd known Lyle for so long and wasn't the type to be shy,
And even though, under another persona, she'd often teased Lyle, after transforming, she'd never been this physically close to a man.
In this sense, Jiang Cheng could be considered a true spinster.
Awkwardly, Jiang Cheng struggled, trying to find a position from which she could support herself off the ground.
However, with her frail energy, it was almost impossible to climb up from Lyle's broad embrace.
From the side, rather than struggling to get up, Jiang Cheng looked more like a little kitten nestling and acting spoiled in Lyle's arms.
After a long while, exhausted, Jiang Cheng gave up and went limp like a deflated balloon, sprawling on top of Lyle.
Truth be told, after giving in, Jiang Cheng actually found lying in Lyle's arms somewhat comfortable.
"Lyle!"
Jiang Cheng spoke up, "Hurry up and help me up. If you keep holding me like this, I'll go on a killing spree tomorrow! I'll kill every human you want to protect!"
As she spoke, a real murderous intent flashed in Jiang Cheng's eyes.
Damn, she'd almost broken character. After this incident, the threat she posed in Lyle's mind would go down significantly. Damn.
If her authority in Lyle's eyes dipped because of this pointless matter, she would really get angry enough to kill someone.
"Sorry,"
Lyle replied blandly, "you smell really nice. I just found your scent somewhat familiar."
!
Jiang Cheng froze, her body instantly tensing up. Crap, she'd forgotten about this.
Before leaving the house, she had habitually spritzed on some perfume. All of these luxury products had been "borrowed" from the elves' collection when she was under her teacher persona.
Elven craftsmanship was indeed brilliant for making such fancy things.
What she hadn't anticipated was that Lyle's dog nose would really pick up on it.
The perfume was made from the same elven raw materials as the incense in the Mage Tower when she taught Lyle—even from the exact same set.
"You're asking about this?"
Jiang Cheng shrugged, "Recently, an elven delegation has been in the city. I made friends with them and they gave me two bottles of elven perfume."
Lyle nodded—as expected, her teacher was an elf, so she must have used a similar scent.
With one arm propping himself up, Lyle shot up and helped Jiang Cheng to her feet from where she was lying.
"Get up, Jiang Cheng. Let's continue our physical training. You're too weak. Let's start with the basics."
Jiang Cheng patted the dust off her pants with a bitter face—for training, she hadn't even worn a skirt.
Luckily, although she didn't want to do the training, no other problems had been discovered.
She'd really been careless this time, using something from that persona without a second thought.
If Lyle had really pressed her for more details, she'd have had to come up with some other patchwork excuse. What a hassle.
Jiang Cheng breathed a sigh of relief and straightened her long hair, suddenly feeling a bit more energetic about the training.
Until... Lyle stopped her.
"Jiang Cheng,"
Lyle pressed her shoulder and said,
"If you have time, accompany me to meet the elven delegation tomorrow. I want some of that elven perfume and incense too."
"Huh?"
Jiang Cheng turned her head, her mouth opening in shock.
"What's wrong?"
Lyle frowned in confusion and asked,
"Don't worry, if it's about the money, I'll pay for it. Or is there some sort of problem?"
"No problem at all,"
Jiang Cheng replied with a bright smile.
Meanwhile, inside, she was screaming: Damn!
