Chapter 42 Traveling Through the Night
Chapter 42 Traveling Through the Night
Just as the first light of dawn appeared on the horizon—if this desolate planet even had a "horizon."
The campfire had burned out, leaving only a pile of dark red ashes. Liang Bing was still fast asleep, leaning on Keisha's shoulder, a trace of drool still hanging from the corner of her mouth, completely unseemly. He Xi had woken up sometime earlier and was staring blankly in the direction of the cave entrance.
Zhao Chen remained seated in the same spot, motionless.
He didn't need to sleep. His Nascent Soul stage body allowed him to go for months without sleep, but that wasn't the point—he was just waiting.
Wait for dawn. Wait for them to wake up. Wait for the next move.
He Xi suddenly spoke.
"You didn't sleep all night?"
Zhao Chen turned to look at her.
"I'm used to it."
He Xi stared at him for a few seconds.
"Who exactly are you?"
Zhao Chen did not answer immediately.
He Xi's gaze fell on him, scrutinizing him. There was an indescribable aura about this man—not the holiness of an angel, nor the twistedness of a creature from the void, but something much deeper.
"You'll find out eventually," Zhao Chen replied.
He Xi frowned, but did not ask any further questions.
Liang Bing mumbled something indistinctly, rolled over, and almost slipped off Keisha's shoulder.
Keisha opened her eyes.
She hadn't slept all night either. Not because she wasn't tired, but because she was afraid to. The man beside her, her two younger sisters, the unknown situation—she had to stay awake.
But for a brief moment, she did indeed drift off to sleep.
She looked at Zhao Chen, who was gazing out of the cave, his profile particularly clear in the morning light.
"Shall we go now?" she asked.
Zhao Chen nodded.
"The pursuers are probably still looking." "Leave this star system as soon as possible."
Keisha reached out and pushed the ice cream.
"Liang Bing, wake up."
Liang Bing groggily opened her eyes and mumbled, "Just a little longer..."
He Xi walked over and pulled her up.
"Let's get going."
Liang Bing rubbed her eyes, reluctantly being dragged out of the cave. The sky outside was hazy and gray, with no sun in sight, only a few dim stars in the distance.
"Which way?" He Xi asked.
Zhao Chen did not answer, but looked at Keisha.
What do you think?
Keisha was taken aback. She hadn't expected Zhao Chen to ask her that question.
"I..." Keisha thought for a moment, "Let's go to the outer reaches of the Angel Galaxy first. Find a secluded place to heal my injuries. Then we can think about the next step."
Zhao Chen nodded.
"Let's do it that way."
Liang Bing leaned closer, her eyes darting around: "Brother-in-law, do you have a spaceship?"
Zhao Chen glanced at her.
"Brother-in-law?"
Liang Bing grinned and pointed at Keisha: "You're my sister's man, so aren't you my brother-in-law?"
Keisha took a deep breath.
"Liang Bing..."
"That makes sense." Zhao Chen interrupted her, a slight smile playing on his lips. "But there's no spaceship."
Liang Bing blinked: "Then how do we get there?"
Zhao Chen didn't speak, but the Golden Crow Escape Light was activated instantly. A golden light swept up the four people and they disappeared from the spot.
Liang Bing felt a blur before her eyes, and when she opened them again, she was already in the starry sky.
"Aaaaaah—" she screamed, hugging He Xi tightly. "We're flying! We're flying!"
He Xi was choked so tightly she could hardly breathe, but a hint of surprise flashed in her eyes.
This speed... is faster than any angel she has ever seen.
As Zhao Chen pulled her along, Keisha felt the starlight rushing towards her, and a strange feeling welled up inside her. She had never "flew" like this before—not with her own wings, but being carried by someone else.
Zhao Chen's hand gripped her wrist, his strength neither too tight nor too loose, just enough for her to feel a sense of stability.
She glanced at Zhao Chen secretly.
Zhao Chen was gazing ahead, his golden pupils reflecting the boundless sea of stars.
-
An hour later, they landed on another desolate asteroid.
This planet was smaller than the previous one, only a few dozen miles in diameter, with a pitted surface and no signs of life.
Zhao Chen released his grip and looked around.
"This is fine."
Liang Bing collapsed onto a rock, panting heavily.
"Brother-in-law... your speed... it's terrifying... my wings almost got blown off by the wind..."
He Xi walked over and stood next to Zhao Chen.
"What's next?"
Zhao Chen looked at Keisha.
"Focus on healing your injuries first."
Keisha nodded, found a flat rock nearby, sat down, and closed her eyes.
He Xi also sat down and began to regulate her breathing.
Liang Bing lay there for a while, then suddenly got up and moved closer to Zhao Chen.
"Brother-in-law, could you teach me that... what's this 'escape light' thing?"
Zhao Chen glanced at her.
"cannot."
Why?
"You can't learn it."
Liang Bing retorted, unconvinced: "How do you know I can't learn it?"
Zhao Chen did not explain.
He Xi opened her eyes, looked at the scene, and seemed to be deep in thought.
Keisha also opened her eyes and looked at Zhao Chen.
"That escape technique of yours... is it a talent of your race?"
Zhao Chen remained silent for a moment.
"I guess so."
Liang Bing blinked: "Race? What race are you?"
Zhao Chen looked at her, then at Keisha, and finally at He Xi.
All three women stared at him, waiting for his answer.
"The demon race," Zhao Chen said.
Liang Bing was stunned.
"Demon race? What are those?"
"A race you've never heard of."
He Xi frowned.
"Where did it come from?"
"A very far place."
Liang Bing leaned closer: "How far is 'very far'?"
Zhao Chen did not answer.
Keisha looked into his eyes, those golden pupils appearing exceptionally deep in the dim light. She suddenly realized that this man harbored many secrets.
But she didn't ask any more questions.
"Liang Bing, come here," she said.
Liang Bing pouted, but still obediently ran over.
Keisha looked at Zhao Chen, her gaze calm.
"No matter where you're from, thank you for saving us."
Zhao Chen looked at her, a very faint smile curving his lips.
"You're welcome."
The campfire was lit again.
The four people sat around the fire, each lost in their own thoughts.
-
Late at night.
Liang Bing fell asleep leaning against He Xi, and this time she didn't drool. He Xi's eyes were closed, her breathing even, it was hard to tell if she was really asleep or not.
Keisha leaned against the fire, staring blankly at the flickering flames. Her wounds had mostly healed, but her mind was still in turmoil. That man… she couldn't decide how to treat him.
He saved her, but also threatened her. He said he wanted her, yet he always kept his distance.
Just then, I heard light footsteps behind me.
She subconsciously turned her head, and Zhao Chen had already sat down next to her, very close to her.
Keisha's body stiffened slightly.
"you……"
Zhao Chen didn't say anything, but simply reached out and gently put his arm around her shoulder.
Keisha tensed up, but didn't push him away.
His hands were warm; you could feel the heat even through his clothes. The pressure wasn't strong, but it carried an undeniable air of authority.
"What are you doing?" Keisha asked in a low voice, afraid of waking Liang Bing and He Xi.
Zhao Chen turned his head to look at her, the firelight dancing in his eyes.
I want to hug you.
Keisha was stunned.
What is the reason for this?
She opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but found herself not knowing what to say.
Zhao Chen made no further move, simply holding her close, his gaze fixed on her face. Moonlight slanted in from the cave entrance, casting a soft glow on her long golden hair.
Keisha felt a little uneasy under his gaze and looked away.
"Stop looking."
"It's so beautiful."
Keisha's heart skipped a beat.
Taking a deep breath, Keisha forced herself to calm down.
"You...you let go first."
Zhao Chen did not release it.
He simply tightened his grip and pulled her closer to him.
Keisha bit her lip and did not struggle.
She didn't know why she didn't struggle. She should have hated it, she had only agreed because she was threatened. But... but his embrace was warm, a warmth that reminded her of the feeling of being held by her father when she was a child.
No, it's not the same.
A father is warmth, but he is... a different kind of father.
Keisha couldn't explain it either.
Zhao Chen suddenly raised his other hand and gently brushed aside the stray blonde hair from her forehead.
The movements were very light and slow, as if afraid of hurting her.
Keisha's heart was beating faster and faster.
"You...you mustn't..."
Zhao Chen's fingers slid down her cheek, stopped on her chin, and gently lifted her face.
"Look at me."
Keisha met his gaze.
Those golden eyes were so close, reflecting her face.
"Remember what you said," his voice was low and calm, "You are my woman."
Keisha's breath hitched.
Of course she remembered. She knew the moment she uttered that vow that she could never take it back.
Zhao Chen lowered his head and gently placed a kiss on her forehead.
It was very light, like a feather brushing against you.
Keisha closed her eyes.
She didn't dodge.
But Zhao Chen did not stop.
His lips slid down her forehead, gently landing on her brow. Then, they traveled slowly down the bridge of her nose.
Keisha's eyelashes trembled.
She knew what he was going to do.
I should have avoided him. I should have pushed him away. I should have…
Zhao Chen's lips landed on hers.
It's very light and soft, with a warmth like the sun.
Keisha froze.
For a moment, my mind went completely blank.
It wasn't that domineering, assertive kiss inside the spaceship. This kiss was light and slow, as if testing the waters, or perhaps confirming something.
He just stayed there, without making any further moves.
It was as if they were waiting for her reaction.
Wait for her to push him away, or... accept it.
Keisha's eyelashes trembled.
She raised her hand, but did not push him away.
Instead, she gently grabbed Zhao Chen's shirt collar.
Zhao Chen's lips curled up into a very faint smile.
This deepened the kiss.
She is very gentle, yet brooks no refusal.
Keisha closed her eyes.
Flames danced behind them, casting the shadows of the two embracing.
After an unknown amount of time, Zhao Chen finally released her.
He still held her close, looking down at Keisha. The firelight reflected on her face, and her golden eyes held a new light that wasn't there before.
Keisha's breathing was erratic, and her cheeks were burning hot. She turned her face away, not daring to look at Zhao Chen.
"you……"
"Um?"
"……asshole."
Zhao Chen chuckled softly.
The laughter was short and soft, yet it made her heart skip a beat.
He pulled her into his arms, resting his chin on the top of her head.
"Go to sleep."
Keisha leaned against his chest, listening to his steady heartbeat.
Close your eyes.
This time, she didn't think about it anymore.
-
After an unknown amount of time, Liang Bing turned over and groggily opened her eyes.
She saw the scene by the fire—Keisha was leaning against Zhao Chen, who was holding her, and both of them had their eyes closed.
Liang Bing paused for a second, then a big smile spread across her face.
"Oh~"
Keisha suddenly opened her eyes and found herself still leaning against Zhao Chen's chest, her face immediately turning red.
"Liang Bing! You—"
"I didn't see anything!" Liang Bing immediately covered her eyes, but her fingers were so wide that a fist could fit between them. "You guys continue, continue!"
He Xi was also woken up. She glanced at it, a very faint smile appeared on her lips, and then she closed her eyes again.
Keisha took a deep breath and was about to speak when Zhao Chen released her grip.
"Go to sleep," he said casually.
Liang Bing immediately lay down, muttering, "Goodnight, brother-in-law~"
Keisha: "..."
She glared at Liang Bing and leaned back in her seat.
But the corners of his mouth unconsciously curved upwards into a tiny arc.
The flames flickered.
The cave fell silent again.
