Chapter 23 People I Shouldn't Have Met
Jackal patted Lu Chen on the shoulder and said, "Don't worry, you won't die. At worst, you'll be demoted or have your salary reduced. If all else fails, you can leave Blackwater."
"Hey bro, why don't you go find Mike? He's a really nice guy," Lu Chen joked. Then he shook his head helplessly. He'd actually helped him recruit someone; was he really that reluctant?
"You little rascal, I think you really don't want to leave. But then again, leaving here won't be easy. You'll probably have to spend half of that box of money," the jackal said with a sigh.
Lu Chen frowned. He looked down at the black box, which should still contain 1.5 million US dollars. To leave this place, it would cost so much money. This was outrageous. No wonder Mike and the others didn't want to leave; they couldn't afford to.
He earned this money with great difficulty, and it would be such a waste to give it away like this. Now he's starting to hesitate.
Meanwhile, the car had reached the outer perimeter of the base, where a row of houses stood. They could transfer funds without even entering the base; they only needed to go into these houses.
Lu Chen and Jackal got out of the car and walked towards the house.
Base soldiers patrolled the area around the house. The two men identified themselves and registered, making it easy for them to enter the house.
There is a passageway in the house, with small rooms on both sides, each with a door number.
Lu Chen found the transfer sign, pushed open the door and went inside. There were two tables with two computers on them, and two staff members were there.
Lu Chen sat down in the chair, and before he could speak, the staff member said loudly, "Which company are you from? You know the rules, right?"
"Werewolf Mercenary Group, you know the rules. Transfer the funds to China, 500,000 US dollars," Lu Chen said, handing over the pre-written domestic account number and the 500,000 US dollars.
He didn't know how it happened, but he somehow managed to save a million dollars. This money wasn't his own; it belonged to Mike and the others. He couldn't keep it all for himself, and he hadn't mentioned going back to China.
The staff member said with a mocking look, "So you're a werewolf. You're still alive this month. Not bad. We only have income if you're alive. After deducting the handling fee, transfer 400,000. It will arrive in an hour." He then laughed twice.
Lu Chen naturally understood. He felt this was an insult to him, and he stood up abruptly, his fists clenched.
The jackal grabbed his fist tightly, shook his head, and said that fighting here was not a good thing. Not only would he be captured by the allied forces, but he would also be extorted by them, and he might even lose his life here.
Jackal dragged Lu Chen out, and the two returned to the car. They didn't leave in a hurry; they wanted to wait an hour to confirm that the money had arrived.
It was past noon. Jackal took out a few compressed biscuits and handed them to Lu Chen, shaking his head and saying, "Brother, the worst thing you can do here is act impulsively. They want you to get angry and cause trouble, so they can make money."
After the jackal finished speaking, he looked at Lu Chen and smiled, saying, "So, do you still want to go back to China? I saw a sign earlier that says to go back to China to apply for a travel permit. You have enough money left over. Then go to a neighboring country, find the embassy, and you can go back to China."
Lu Chen swallowed a compressed biscuit in one gulp, slamming his fist on the steering wheel. These vampires, damn it! He didn't even know if he should go back; the price of going back would be too high.
And now we don't know how Mike and his team are doing. If Rahman had acted quickly enough, they might have already started fighting. Without effective tactics, Mike and his team would have a hard time defeating Rahman.
Just then, the base gates opened, and a Hummer roared out. As it passed Lu Chen and his group, he saw a familiar face.
He couldn't help but push open the car door and look at the Humvee rushing past. He muttered to himself, "It's Rahman. What's he doing here?" Logically speaking, the coalition base should be supporting the government forces. What is this guy doing here? Is he here to deal with Ibn?
Jackal walked up to Lu Chen and said softly, "This is not surprising. These warlords are all driven by self-interest. As long as there is profit, enemies can become friends."
Suddenly, Rahman's Hummer braked sharply, then reversed rapidly, heading straight for Lu Chen.
Lu Chen gripped his submachine gun and rushed to the side. The Hummer grazed past him, which enraged him. Rahman was trying to kill him.
He quickly raised his submachine gun and locked onto the target.
Jackal grabbed Lu Chen's hand and shook his head, saying, "You can't shoot here. Rahman was just trying to scare you."
Rahman rolled down the car window, looked at Lu Chen, and shouted, "Kid, we meet again. You want to kill me? Come on, I'm waiting for you to kill me."
Lu Chen gripped his submachine gun and charged forward instantly, pressing the black muzzle against Rahman's head. A ruthless glint flashed in his eyes; if the old man spoke again, he would definitely kill him.
The jackal was startled, fearing that Lu Chen would act impulsively, so he rushed over, grabbed his hand, and shook his head vigorously. He looked at Rahman and said coldly, "Rahman, we meet again. He is my friend."
"Your boss is Katyusha, good, very good. You took my money and you're friends?" Rahman said angrily, but he didn't dare to make a move. He knew that Katyusha was a Bronze-level mercenary with ten Iron-level mercenaries under her command. Each Iron-level mercenary had ten ordinary mercenaries under their command, making a total of one hundred mercenaries, enough to storm into Rahman's camp and kill him.
"You're alive and well, but Mike and the others won't have it so easy. I want them all dead. They're probably enjoying being killed right now," Rahman said arrogantly. He then waved to the driver, and the Hummer roared like a wild beast as it sped off.
Lu Chen watched the Humvee rush away, then ran a few steps forward. He really wanted to kill the guy, but he knew that in the Allied base, whoever made a move would die.
Thinking of Mike and the others' situation, his heart ached. No, he had to save them, even if it meant fighting his way back alone.
He turned abruptly and charged toward the pickup truck. As he started the engine, he shouted, "Jackal, I have to get back to Gangdi Town. Mike and the others need me. Find yourself a ride." With that, he slammed on the gas, and the pickup truck sped off.
But when he turned around, he saw Jackal sitting in the passenger seat, and he said anxiously, "Why haven't you left yet? Hurry up and go."
"Lu Chen, you dodged the assassination attempt and defeated me. You could have easily killed me, but you didn't. You even saved me. I owe you my life. Come with me to Blackwater. With your skills, you're at least a Silver-rank mercenary," Jackal said earnestly.
He can't save the people of Gangdi Town, nor can he save Mike and the others, but he can save Lu Chen. As long as he joins Blackwater, Rahman won't dare to touch him.
