Chapter 506 - 60: The Boss and the Secretary
Although the signal in the mountains was poor, it didn’t affect the camera shooting.Qu Fulan’s studio usually shoots footage first and then edits it into short videos for release, so the lack of signal wasn’t a big issue.
In fact, Qu Fulan was prepared for the poor signal in the mountains before she set off. She thought there would be at least some signal, even if just enough to send a message, but there turned out to be none at all.
She knew about this place because she had been here as a child. Back then, she had come with her mother for some matter, walking for several hours, and she thought the scenery was unique.
She hadn’t expected that after so many years, there would still be no development in the mountains, not even a signal.
Qu Fulan introduced herself to the village chief. When the chief learned that she was once a resident of the village and had visited as a child, he remembered her immediately and welcomed them warmly.
In the evening, everyone stayed with different farm households. Qu Fulan stayed with her best friend and two male colleagues, half of the studio’s team—mostly men and a few women, to ensure everyone’s safety.
As Qu Fulan lay in bed that night, she felt restless because she couldn’t send a message to Pei Ji’an to tell him she was safe. She could only wait until daylight to climb to the mountain’s peak and send him a message.
It was not her intention to break her promise, but she ultimately failed to keep it.
Feeling guilty, Qu Fulan finally fell asleep, though not peacefully. She dreamed that Pei Ji’an, not having received her safety call, had chased after her. In front of the villagers, he spanked her, causing her immense shame. She woke up frightened from the dream.
It was five o’clock by then, time for them to get up and climb the mountain. The sunrise in the mountains was different from the one by the sea—they couldn’t leave without capturing it.
After climbing for over an hour, they were exhausted but finally reached the top. They successfully captured the magnificent sunrise. While everyone else packed up, Qu Fulan sneaked away to call her boyfriend.
But she couldn’t get through.
She had no choice but to send him a text, saying she had arrived safely, explaining why she hadn’t called the previous night, and adding some sentimental words. Reluctantly, she put away her phone and descended the mountain with the group. Some went to other places to shoot, while she and a few others went shopping in the town.
Though they brought many things, staying for a month meant they still needed to buy essentials.
However, it took two hours to walk out of the mountains and another two-hour drive. By the time they finished shopping, there were no more vehicles returning, so they had to find accommodation in a local inn for the night.
Fortunately, Qu Fulan was prepared and had packed bedding in her bag.
When everything was finally settled, Qu Fulan checked her phone to see if there was any reply, but there was none.
What was going on?
Unable to resist, she dialed his number again, but still couldn’t get through. Had his phone run out of battery? That didn’t seem right—she had never known him to have a dead phone.
After pondering for a moment, she called his assistant, but she couldn’t reach him either.
What was happening?
Little did Qu Fulan know that because she hadn’t called the previous night, Pei Ji’an had set off early in the morning for the mountains, along with his assistant and several bodyguards.
Qu Fulan’s calls coincided with when he was in a no-signal area, so naturally, she couldn’t reach him.
At this crucial moment, Pei Ji’an and his team had already entered the mountains, where there was even less signal.
By the time Pei Ji’an arrived in the mountains and found out that Qu Fulan and the others had gone to town to shop, his expression was anything but pleasant.
But it was already dark and the journey long, so setting out recklessly was not an option. He had to wait until daybreak.
In just two days, the village had two waves of visitors, all seemingly wealthy, arousing the villagers’ curiosity, but there was no malice.
Although there’s a saying that ’impoverished mountains produce troublesome people,’ it’s not absolute. At least in this mountain, people are straightforward, or Qu Fulan would never have come here.
After talking with the village chief, Pei Ji’an understood the village’s general situation, and though he said nothing, he had some plans in mind.
The next day, Pei Ji’an left the mountains again. As there were two routes, he wasn’t sure which one she would take, and missing her again wasn’t an option. He took three people along one path and the rest along another. If they didn’t meet, they would wait at the intersection.
Without a signal, foolishly going to the town wasn’t wise. If she returned by car and they missed again, it would be endless.
As it turned out, Pei Ji’an was right. They met at the intersection, having not encountered Qu Fulan and her party, and finally, a vehicle arrived after half an hour.
This type of vehicle made only three trips a day—morning, noon, and night. Miss it, and there wasn’t another.
Qu Fulan and her group got off the vehicle, each carrying quite a few things. Seeing Pei Ji’an, Qu Fulan froze.
Even standing in the wilderness, the tall man with long legs gave off an exceptional aura, perhaps even more handsome and captivating than in the city, but his dark expression exuded immense pressure.
Qu Fulan couldn’t help but recall the dream, realizing that he hadn’t received her safety call, so he came regardless of everything, spending a day on the road, only to find that she wasn’t there when he arrived.
Understanding the situation, the woman stopped her steps mid-stride.
She even had an impulse to run away.
But she didn’t dare to in the end; staying might not result in trouble, but running surely would.
As it turned out, Qu Fulan’s decision was correct. Pei Ji’an didn’t punish her as he did in the dream. Instead, he took the things from her hands and headed into the mountains.
Qu Fulan followed him with a smile, trying to ease the awkward atmosphere with conversation. However, the rugged mountain path made her breathless, making talking more difficult, and since he ignored her, Qu Fulan decided not to talk, saving her energy for walking.
They finally returned to the village. She distributed the daily necessities to her teammates, and there were plenty of fruits and snacks for the villagers and children.
After a day on the road, Qu Fulan felt sticky with sweat and went to the farmhouse’s shower.
The bathroom, separate from the living room, was in the backyard—just a makeshift shelter with a door.
After showering, Qu Fulan returned to her room. As soon as she entered, someone grabbed her wrist. Startled, she was about to scream when she saw who it was and swallowed the scream. But then Pei Ji’an pushed her onto the bed, raising his hand and striking her bottom.
The "smack smack smack" sounds stunned Qu Fulan.
Though she had dreamt it, she couldn’t accept it actually happening.
The worst part was that the smacks were relentless, making Qu Fulan’s bottom go numb.
Embarrassment, shame, and grievance flooded her mind. Qu Fulan gritted her teeth, got up, and charged at him.
"How dare you hit me? I’ll fight you!"
