Chapter 23, The Reckless Man
Chapter 23, The Reckless Man
She stumbled back to the shop, which had been spotlessly cleaned by the imposing Eagle Brother. She wandered around like a ghost, still wearing Lin Zhou's cotton-padded coat.
Lin Zhou felt that this Eagle was like an NPC in a top-tier open-world game. When she wasn't in the player's field of vision, she would do her own thing, but once the player appeared in her field of vision, she would start reading out commands.
Anyway, ever since Lin Zhou appeared in the shop, she never left a distance of more than two meters from him. With a strange sense of precision, she would stop whenever Lin Zhou turned around, but she would also move whenever Lin Zhou moved.
"Why are you acting like a female ghost... Don't you sleep well?"
"Sir, I slept from noon until evening..."
"Tsk..."
Lin Zhou, hands on his hips and reeking of drunkenness, said, "Old Cao sent you to spy on me, didn't he?"
"Sir, I don't know what you're talking about..."
"I'm going to take my clothes off!"
Lin Zhou pretended to take off his clothes, wanting to use this tired-out-of-the-times-on-TV scene to scare away this tagalong, but to his surprise, the other person not only blushed and dodged, but also stared wide-eyed at his groin.
"Hey! I'll fucking swear..."
Lin Zhou simply ignored her and went straight into his room to sleep. He even locked the door before Brother Ying came in, but when he turned around, he saw her sticking her butt out and squeezing through the corridor window.
"No way, are you out of your mind?!" Lin Zhou sat up. "I told you to keep watch, not to watch me even while I'm sleeping!"
Eagle lowered his head and gently bit his lip: "They told me... told me... told me to keep a close eye on the master."
"Fuck..."
Lin Zhou was amused by her. At this moment, he felt that in some ways, Lao Cao was a complete fool who had carefully selected this person to be his informant.
"Then you keep watch, I'm going to sleep."
Lin Zhou was too lazy to bother anymore. The effects of the alcohol were starting to kick in. He didn't feel anything when drinking that lousy rice wine, but as soon as he went outside, damn it... the wind was 52 degrees Celsius.
He lay down and slept until dawn, ignoring the fact that he hadn't woken up naturally, but rather from the cold. Opening his eyes, he saw that Brother Ying was sleeping soundly next to him. Not only was he sleeping soundly, but he had also stolen the blanket. He was cold because this guy had rolled up the blanket, leaving half of Lin Zhou's buttocks exposed, and when he touched it, it was icy cold.
"You motherfucker..."
Lin Zhou cursed, then got up and went out. His morning grumpiness combined with the annoyance of a hangover made him smash the pots and pans like a table tennis ball while washing up. When he turned around, he saw that Brother Ying, who was in charge of monitoring him, had rolled up his body and wrapped the rest of the blankets around himself, making him completely unable to wake up.
Lin Zhou didn't bother with her. He got dressed and went outside. There was almost no one outside at the moment, except for some breakfast stalls that were starting to light up.
Just as he was waiting for the steamed buns to come out of the pot, a figure suddenly sat down opposite him.
"I've looked around, and it seems there's no one watching you."
The speaker was none other than Cheng'er. Dressed casually and looking around nervously, he said, "I've been watching all night, but I haven't seen anyone."
"Oh, you didn't see anyone. The one who was watching me is sleeping soundly right now."
Lin Zhou said in a displeased tone, "That Cao Wenda hired a pig to spy on me."
He then told Xu Cheng everything about Brother Eagle, and Xu Cheng was greatly shocked after listening: "Why is this happening?"
"You could say she's smart, and she really is quite smart. You could also say she's not smart, and she's incredibly stubborn. She's really shown me the diversity of human nature."
Lin Zhou's words were somewhat too modern for Cheng'er. He didn't understand much of it, but he could mostly guess what he meant. So, after trying to understand for a moment, he asked, "So, what do you think we should do now? Should we leave her here, or should I handle it for you?"
"Don't do anything more to her," Lin Zhou said silently, shaking his head. "If we deal with her, what if we get a more capable person instead?"
"Logically speaking, Cao Wenda wouldn't ask someone like that to do this kind of thing."
Lin Zhou shrugged: "Never mind that. All they want to know is where my goods come from, and they want to get my supply channels. That's all these people are after."
"So what are your plans right now?"
"Just do what needs to be done. As long as the medicine gets out, at least we've gotten things done using them. Tell your dad..." Lin Zhou's tone suddenly turned serious: "Next time I go back, I plan to have a good talk with them. Screw the non-interference principle, we have to interfere! So I might bring some really outrageous things over."
"What do you mean...that's going too far?"
Lin Zhou lowered his eyelids and pursed his lips: "I don't know yet. We'll see what they say then. If it doesn't work out, we'll try to exchange it with things from here!"
"What will you use to exchange it for?"
"We'll see when the time comes, and see what they need."
After these days of maneuvering, Lin Zhou has probably figured some things out. Whether it's the other side or this side, the core decision-makers are people. As the saying goes, the values in white films don't apply to the yellow-skinned world. People are all made of flesh and blood.
Lin Zhou's goals for this trip back were very clear. First, he wanted to capture those experts and use them as comfort dogs, giving them a thorough description of the struggles and suffering of ordinary people in this place. Second, he wanted to have a good talk with them and see if he could upgrade the mission's authority—he could always buy it!
There's a vast expanse of land here that can be used for planning. Anyway, his cooldown time only records the weight of the things he brings from one side to the other, not the weight of the things he brings from the other side. He could build an unmanned factory or an unmanned fleet... Just thinking about it is awesome.
But how to put it... he's not a teenager anymore, and he knows the world doesn't always work the way he imagines. But he still wants to give it a try; the shocks of the past few days have had a profound impact on his mind and spirit. This has subtly changed his tourist-like mentality.
He wasn't great; he had his own greed, anger, and ignorance, and his own lustful desires. But he really didn't want to see a skinny little child kowtowing and thanking her for an eight-cent bottle of medicine anymore.
This scene made it hard for him to breathe; he felt suffocated from yesterday until now. And the dead child illuminated by the torch, the last glimmer of light in his eyes—even now, the thought of it still makes Lin Zhou's heart pound.
People shouldn't live like this, and they certainly shouldn't die like this.
So when he goes back this time, he must bring this up seriously. After all, the ability is his, and his authority is unparalleled!
