Chapter 340: The Child of Fate.
Chapter 340: The Child of Fate.
"Sooo, tell me, my baby... Do you have any girlfriends yet?"
"...I am sorry, what?"
Alden muttered in confusion.
What the hell is she talking about?
He had imagined a moment about meeting his long-lost mother like this once or twice before. He had even imagined the things she might say, the questions she might ask but never, in any of those imaginations, had he expected this.
Like, what the hell was going on?
"Ahh, your reaction already answers it." She sighed dramatically as if disappointed. "But then again, your father was the same dense rock as you. So I guess it’s not surprising even if you don’t have any girlfriends."
Alden frowned.
"Please get to the point and tell me where we are and what did you do to Jeremy? And where is Nyx?"
He wasn’t in the mood for jokes.
His first priority was finding Nyx. She had jumped into danger to save him and if anything happened to her because of him... How could he ever forgive himself?
But his mother merely tilted her head, resting her chin on her hand thoughtfully.
"Jeremy? Nyx? Who?"
She asked as though she had never heard those names before but Alden had seen her. She had appeared at the end and killed Jeremy.
So she should at least know him, right?
"Weren’t you the one who gave that strange technique to Jeremy? The technique he used to try and take over my body? The one where you appeared afterward, condensed him into energy and merged him with me?"
"Ahh, so you mean the anchors."
She lightly punched her palm as though she had finally solved some grand mystery.
"Anchors?" Alden asked, completely lost.
What the hell is she even talking about?
"Well, I do owe you some answers, I guess." She smiled. "So let’s start slowly with my introduction. You need to know how cool your mom used to be once upon a time, you know."
She puffed out her chest proudly before snapping her fingers. The entire world around them froze. The birds, the river, even the sounds and everything else stopped completely.
Then the surroundings shifted, leaving the chairs they sat on unchanged.
The sky above transformed into an endless sea of stars and celestial bodies as his mother stood up and walked toward one particular planet that towered over all the others around it as it circled across a massive sun.
"Many years ago, far away from this little world called Eryndor, I was born on that planet. The world ruled by your grandfather, Eidolon Thalyros, The world of Aurelion."
She spoke, pointing at that planet as if discussing events from yesterday.
"Your grandpa is the patriarch of one of the strongest clans in this entire expanse and he possessed an element others could only dream of wielding — Fate and as his daughter, I inherited the purest affinity for it as well ever since I was a child."
She paused before grinning.
"Though your uncle Mokah was a complete loser in that regard."
She chuckled to herself as if she had made the greatest joke in existence but Alden’s attention had already locked onto something else.
"Mokah...?"
He knew that name. It was the guardian of his second Chaos Trial. The monkey Mokah, the one who had reacted to the Dance of Chaos and nearly killed him.
"Ohh, you might have met him already once."
She nodded casually.
"After all, I made sure to pull the threads of fate connecting the two of you before I was captured."
She waved her hand dismissively. "But that’s for later. Now where was I again?"
"Ahh right..."
"My backstory."
She continued her story.
"I was raised with countless expectations placed upon me. I was supposed to surpass my father and as if to reinforce that expectation, I awakened my first ability at the age of five."
She looked toward the stars.
"The cursed ability known as Future Sight. It showed me fragments of what had been and what could be and for a long time, I devoted myself only to perfecting those abilities until..."
Her voice softened.
"I met him."
"Your father."
"His name is Azriel, a wanderer of unknown origin, he began making a name for himself as the greatest prodigy to ever exist with his explosive growth as soon as he defeated one master after another before he came to Aurelion to challenge my father."
A small chuckle escaped her lips.
"And because I was a fool back then... and because arrogance had been nurtured inside me since childhood... I grew jealous of him. How could a mere nobody challenge my father? That was my thought."
"So I challenged him."
Her smile turned nostalgic.
"But I couldn’t defeat him. Not even once. Still, I kept challenging him again and again and somewhere along the way, I fell in love."
Alden listened silently. A part of him still felt slightly irritated. None of this explained what he had actually asked but despite that... He didn’t stop listening.
"My father opposed it. He said Azriel was an anomaly, a being without a clear past. He warned me to stay away from him."
"So..."
She smiled helplessly.
"...I ran away from home."
Her eyes drifted toward the endless stars once again.
"I wandered across the expanse with him as we travelled through countless worlds, saved some from tyrants and while doing so, we slowly grew even closer. The worlds we saved began calling us by many names. Ananke, Seer of Fate, and many more. That was also the same time, I acquired the technique I gave to that Jeremy person and that was also the time... when Caera was born.
Her expression dimmed slightly.
"But alongside our boundless happiness, a curse soon followed and I received the first message from fate."
"What was the message?"
Alden asked curiously.
His mother turned toward him, her eyes slightly distant for a moment.
"...It was about you, Alden."
"The message fate had sent... was about you."
