Chapter 309: Yue’s Fever
Chapter 309: Yue’s Fever
"You never have to express it at all."
There was nothing but fear at the sight of Roland springing back to his feet with enough force to make it seem like he had springs hidden inside him.
Still, seeing that he was energetic enough to act like this at least reassured everyone that things would probably be fine.
...
Qiong Xing gently stroked Yue’s head and held his hand as the child whimpered painfully through tears.
"Mamaa..."
"It hurts, does it? Let us rest quietly today, and tomorrow we can play as much as you want again."
Qiong Xing had thought Yue seemed a little low on energy since this morning, but when the child suddenly collapsed as though her batteries had run out, he had panicked badly.
The fall had clearly looked unnatural, so Qiong Xing rushed over immediately, scooped up the crying Yue, and carried her to the room.
No matter how many times he asked where it hurt, Yue only cried that it hurt, while Raon who had been nearby approached in concern as well.
"She suddenly fell while playing in the garden earlier. Yue, where does it hurt?"
"Mamaa... hurts..."
It was unusual for Yue, who normally spoke clearly, to sound this distressed.
When Qiong Xing took the small trembling hand reaching toward him, he finally noticed something strange.
Yue’s body felt hotter than usual.
Thinking something might be wrong, Qiong Xing touched his forehead, cheeks, and neck, only to realize the child was burning up with a very obvious fever.
"Maybe it is a cold. She seems to have a fever."
"Then healing magic will not work. That only helps with injuries. Illness is another matter entirely."
Beastkin naturally had very high body temperatures to begin with, but a fever made Yue’s body feel almost painfully hot.
Qiong Xing wanted nothing more than to hold the crying child close, but worried that doing so would only make her feel even hotter.
"We need to cool her body down. Could you watch the two of them while I prepare some things?"
"No, I will go get everything. Just tell me what you need."
Qiong Xing decided to accept Raon’s help and explained what was needed before carefully laying Yue down on the bed.
"Just hang in there a little longer, alright? Raon is bringing what we need right now. Rui, Rui, come over here too..."
"Waaahhh..."
The moment Qiong Xing called his name, Rui suddenly burst into tears as well.
Startled, Qiong Xing reached out toward him.
Could Rui be sick too?
He quickly touched Rui’s forehead, but unlike Yue, there was no noticeable fever.
Then maybe he was hurt somewhere?
But no matter how many times Qiong Xing asked where it hurt, Rui only shook his head.
"He is probably crying because Yue is crying. Since they are twins, maybe he feels something stronger because of that."
While Qiong Xing stood there at a complete loss, Joa entered the room while speaking casually, likely having already heard everything from Raon.
"Kids around this age do that pretty often. If she gets some sleep, she will probably be fine by tomorrow."
Was that really how it worked?
Still, Joa had probably watched over countless children belonging to his companions over the years, so Qiong Xing doubted he was wrong.
In the end, they decided to keep an eye on Yue for today and take her into city tomorrow if she still looked unwell.
"This should help a little... It feels awful, does it not? Try to sleep without forcing yourself."
After helping Yue drink some water Raon had brought, Qiong Xing placed a cooled towel on her forehead.
Then he gently sent a breeze over her with magic to help her feel more comfortable.
Once Yue finally seemed to settle down and drift toward sleep, Qiong Xing softly stroked her head.
"She probably cannot handle a proper meal, so maybe I should prepare some fruit instead. Rui, come with me too."
Since Rui had stopped crying once Yue fell asleep, Qiong Xing picked him up and left Yue in Joa’s care before heading toward the kitchen.
Perhaps because Yue was not beside him, Rui looked unusually downcast.
Qiong Xing sat him in a chair before kneeling in front of him so their eyes were level.
"Will you help Yue get better quickly too, Rui?"
"...Will she get better?"
Because the twins were always together, the anxiety probably felt even stronger for Rui.
"I am sure he will feel better soon. But if Yue gets better while you are still looking this gloomy, then Yue might collapse again worrying about you. So try to cheer up for her, alright? When Yue is not feeling well, you can look after her. And when you are feeling down, Yue will surely look after you too."
Perhaps because they were twins, they could understand each other’s feelings deeply.
But even so, Qiong Xing did not want them to be dragged down entirely by each other’s sadness.
Rather than simply sharing each other’s pain, Qiong Xing wanted them to support one another precisely because they understood.
Perhaps it was still too early for Rui to fully understand something like that, but even if he could not grasp it now, Qiong Xing hoped he would remember these words someday.
"Let us help Yue feel better together, alright? If Yue learns that Rui helped take care of her, I am sure she will be very happy."
"Okay. Rui will help too."
Since Rui had finally regained some motivation, Qiong Xing asked him to help make juice together.
He also prepared some grated apple in case Yue could manage to eat it.
When Qiong Xing let Rui taste a little himself, Rui finally smiled again and declared it delicious.
"Rui helped make this for Yue, you know. It has honey in it too, so it is sweet and tasty."
Since he had mixed honey into the lemon water, it would also be gentle on Yue’s throat and easier to drink.
